Summer is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the sunshine, connect with the community, and try something new. And the best part? You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have fun!
Whether you’re supporting someone with social goals, building independence, or just looking for enjoyable, meaningful activities, here are 5 free or low-cost summer ideas support workers can enjoy with NDIS participants.
🌳 1. Picnic in the Park
Cost: Free (just bring snacks!)
Why it’s great: Parks offer open space, shade, and a calming environment for relaxed conversation, people-watching, or games.
Make it meaningful: Involve the NDIS participant in the planning: choosing the park, deciding what to bring, packing the picnic, or making a simple snack together. To make it a more educational experience, you can even have the Member direct you there and practice navigation skills.
- Bonus idea: Bring a frisbee, cards, or bubbles for some simple outdoor fun!

🧑‍🎨 2. DIY Arts & Crafts Outdoors
Cost: Low (many supplies from $2 shops or using recycled materials)
Why it’s great: Creative activities are great for self-expression and building fine motor skills. Doing it outside adds a sensory element and avoids indoor mess.
Make it meaningful: Use nature as inspiration: paint leaves, make flower crowns, or collect materials for a collage.
- Tip: Some local libraries or councils run free art workshops. Worth checking them out!

🎧 3. Free Local Events & Markets
Cost: Free entry
Why it’s great: Community events, summer markets, and outdoor concerts are fun and social. They’re also a great way to work on confidence in public spaces.
Make it meaningful: Set small goals like trying a new food, talking to a stallholder, or using money to buy something small. This can be a good opportunity to teach budgeting skills and social skills
- Try searching “Adelaide free summer events” or check the city or local council website for what’s on.
